Another reason to visit Maui right now: A giant pineapple-shaped gingerbread house
Forget everything you know about those tabletop gingerbread houses with white icing used to create snowy rooftops. One of Maui’s resorts has created a giant concoction that’s a twist on the traditional holiday treat.
Executive pastry chef Yoshikazu Kizu and his team spent a week in early December crafting the larger-than-life “pineapple house.”
You’ll find it at the Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua through New Year’s Day. The sweet scent will lead your nose (and the rest of you) to the lobby.
The numbers behind the eye-popping display are staggering. The structure consists of 900 gingerbread “bricks” and 600 gingerbread “roofing tiles.”
The construction materials were made using 1,000 eggs, 750 pounds of sugar, 600 pounds of flour, 100 pounds of butter and 35 pounds of molasses. (Those are just a few of the many ingredients.)
The gingerbread house can be viewed, photographed and smelled daily from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Holiday goodies such as large pineapple-shaped gingerbread cookies and chocolate bark are for sale at the display.
The pineapple design was chosen thanks to Kapalua’s pineapple-growing heritage and because, in Hawaii, the fruit is a symbol of hospitality, a news release says.
