JSerra keeps allowing teams to use its baseball field to help deal with rain
JSerra baseball coach Brett Kay is either positioning himself to run for mayor of San Juan Capistrano or is simply one of the nicest people around.
Because of the high school baseball season starting earlier and repeated rain, lots of teams have had difficulty practicing or playing games on flooded fields.
Enter Kay, who has two all-weather diamonds at JSerra. He has welcomed teams to his field, public and private. On Saturday night, he stayed at JSerra until 11:45 p.m. for the completion of a doubleheader between Orange Lutheran and Huntington Beach.
“We wouldn’t have been able to play that doubleheader unless Brett steps up,” Huntington Beach coach Benji Medure said.
On Monday, three games were played at JSerra starting at 9 a.m. Kay was at the field by 6 a.m. for Chino Hills-Yucaipa. Then JSerra played Tesoro and El Toro played Los Alamitos. There have been at least eight games played at JSerra.
“I’m just a big fan of high school baseball,” Kay said. “I want to see kids play and coaches coach. I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
