Narciso Rodriguez unveils exclusive collection in New York

Cuban-born fashion designer Narciso Rodriguez on Tuesday in New York presented a new practical, modern and feminine collection designed for The Conservatory, the exclusive Manhattan store located in the real estate project of the moment, Hudson Yards.

At the show, the designer opted for elegant knee-length dresses highlighting women’s curves, presenting both closed necklines and V-necks in black and cream that were combined with short, tight jackets in both tones.

Tube skirts and short-sleeve tops were also presented, as well as small handbags with a modern leopard print as accessories.

Rodriguez designed the collection at the request of The Conservatory, which wanted to recreate one of his 1999 lines, and the new designs include five looks formed by “essential garments for today’s woman.”

“What they liked about my 1999 collection is that it was a timeless collection, and I was inspired by that idea for this one. These are pieces that can be used during the day, in the evening or for traveling,” Rodriguez told EFE.

The garments that are not for use at a particular time of year, but rather are “versatile” and adapted “to the needs of today’s woman.”

“I think the way we dress today is very different from the concept of buying something only for a specific time (of the year). For example, I wear pants that I use both for work and to go out in at night,” the designer said.

The fashion house is clear about the purpose of its garments: it’s all about creating things that require little effort to maintain and that make women feel good.

“It’s the way I like to design ... to make things that are useful for more than just a season or a year, (so they can be kept) forever and hopefully your daughter will inherit (them one day),” Rodriguez said.

The firm, whose collection will be available at The Conservatory starting on Friday morning, has not participated on the catwalks of New York Fashion Week for a little over a year but will now present two collections at intimate events to be held in December and June, thus distancing themselves from the traditional fashion calendar.

This plan is designed not only to adapt to market transformations, such as the shift towards online purchasing, but also to the personal life of Narciso Rodriguez, who became the father of twins in 2017.

“When my children arrived, I decided that I was not going to spend a summer in front of my desk doing a (show) when I have two children who deserve to be at the beach. It’s a much more modern way of thinking about fashion and that’s life nowadays,” the designer said.

The Conservatory is one of the stores in the massive Hudson Yards development complex in western Manhattan, where more than $20 billion has been invested in what has been touted as the “largest private real estate project in US history.”

In all, Hudson Yards - whose shopping center will open on Friday - will consist of about 100 stores, 4,000 luxurious homes, the avant-garde art center The Shed and more than 5.5 hectares (some 14 acres) of gardens and public spaces.
