Six people were injured Friday when a Fly Jamaica airliner was forced to make an emergency landing at Cheddi Jagan International Airport in Georgetown, Guyana.

The injuries were minor, according to Guyanese first responders.

Flight OJ256 from Georgetown to Toronto, carrying 118 passengers and a crew of eight, returned to the airport about 20 minutes after takeoff, shortly before 3 am, and ran off the end of the runway.

Fly Jamaica President Ronald Reece said the pilot decided to return to the airport due to a problem with the Boeing 757’s hydraulic system.

Guyana’s minister of Public Infrastructure, David Patterson, said that 82 of the passengers are Canadians.

The Guyana Civil Aviation Authority has opened an investigation.
