Marc Gasol scored 20 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead the Memphis Grizzlies to an 89-87 home victory over the Denver Nuggets , who lost for just the second time this NBA season.
The Grizzlies' defense was the difference Wednesday night at the FedExForum in Memphis, as Gasol and company held the Nuggets to under 90 points and just 39 percent shooting from the field.
The game was decided by the narrowest of margins, as Gasol made two free throws with 4.6 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter before center Nikola Jokic misfired on a 3-pointer (his first and only long-range attempt) two seconds later that would have won the game.
The Nuggets still had a chance to tie the contest, but point guard Jamal Murray missed a rebound tip-in attempt with less than a second to go.
Jaren Jackson Jr. also scored 20 points and hauled down seven rebounds for the Grizzlies (6-4).
Shooting guard Gary Harris led the way for the Nuggets (9-2) with 20 points, although he was just 6-of-16 from the field.
Murray had an even worse shooting night, making just six of his 21 shot attempts and finishing with 15 points.
