Edison in prime position after defeating Los Alamitos, 17-9

The last 15 years of Sunset League football have been nothing short of predictable.

Either Huntington Beach Edison or Los Alamitos has won the league title in 14 of those 15 seasons and 2016 looks to be no different.

The winner of Friday night’s televised clash between the No. 14-ranked Chargers and unranked Griffins, barring a massive meltdown over final three weeks of league play, would sit atop the Sunset League once again.

Before the opening kick, Edison Coach Dave White was clear on what his team needed to do to in order to repeat as league champs.

“If we don’t give up big plays and we don’t turn it over on offense, we’ll have a good chance,” he said.

Edison did as White asked and the Chargers took one step closer to capturing another Sunset League crown, defeating Los Alamitos, 17-9, at Veterans Stadium in Long Beach.

Edison quarterback Griffin O’Connor was 14 of 25 passing for 165 yards and a touchdown, while Jack Carmichael rushed for 87 yards on 13 carries and a touchdown.

The Chargers took a 10-9 lead into halftime and opened a 17-9 advantage early in the third quarter on a 12-yard touchdown pass from O’Connor to E.J. Ginnis.

Edison’s defense held Los Alamitos’ electrifying all-purpose player Dylan Laurent out of the end zone and to just 23 total yards of offense, and limited the Griffins to 161 yards of total offense.

Los Alamitos (4-3, 1-1) struck early, receiving the opening kick and scoring on a three-yard touchdown run from Keanu Norman at the 10:30 mark of the first, capping a seven-play, 76-yard drive. A missed PAT made it 6-0 Los Alamitos.

Edison (6-1, 2-0) punted on three of its first four possessions before Carmichael found space up the middle and broke free for a 26-yard touchdown at the 8:34 mark of the second, giving the Chargers a 7-6 lead, which they never relinquished.
