Dorsey makes Crenshaw dance to its tune in 42-14 victory at Coliseum

Dorsey High players were hopping around with excitement as they entered the Coliseum field Saturday morning. If there had been music playing, some would have started to dance.

The Dons couldn’t wait to play rival Crenshaw in a Coliseum League game on the field the Rams and USC call home. In a game full of big plays, Dorsey came away with a 42-14 victory.

Quarterback Jerman Gotoy had touchdown runs of 59, one and eight yards and passed 41 yards to Elijah Boykin for another touchdown. Lavon Card ran 22 yards for a touchdown after stripping the ball from a Crenshaw running back. Trea Bloodworth had sacks resulting in losses of 16 and 17 yards.

“It was amazing,” Bloodworth said of the experience.

“It was a big deal,” Dorsey Coach Charles Mincy said.

Crenshaw’s sole offensive weapon was quarterback Daiyan Henley, who gave the Cougars a brief lead with a 73-yard touchdown run in the first quarter and a 63-yard touchdown pass to Jelani Harris. Crenshaw trailed, 21-14, at halftime.

Henley had 141 yards rushing in 15 carries despite four sacks. Gotoy rushed for 93 yards in seven carries for Dorsey. Charles Mincy Jr. had 69 yards in 10 carries.

By winning, Dorsey (5-3, 2-1) kept its hopes alive to be the No. 2 seed in the City Section Division I playoffs. Crenshaw (4-4, 2-1) plays unbeaten Hawkins (8-0, 3-0) next week.

San Pedro triumphs

In winning its seventh consecutive game and setting up a showdown with unbeaten Narbonne next week, San Pedro turned to the Gafa brothers, Sohl and Junior, to defeat Banning, 20-7, in a Marine League game at the Coliseum.

Sohl, a senior defensive end, had two sacks, but was on crutches by the end of the game with an ice pack on his knee. Junior, a sophomore linebacker, had a first-quarter interception and several tackles.

For them to play together is a family moment that will be cherished.

“It’s an opportunity of a lifetime,” Junior said. “It only comes once.”

Said Sohl: “There’s nothing like it.”

San Pedro (7-1, 3-0) opened a 20-0 halftime lead and thoroughly frustrated the previously unbeaten Pilots (6-1, 2-1). Quarterback Austin Jackson was outstanding. He passed for 134 yards and ran for 62 yards.

Kicker Tanner Carcamo created excitement at the end of the first half by booming a 48-yard field goal.

Banning’s Joe Villarreal had a 42-yard touchdown run and finished with 98 yards in 17 carries.

QB sidelined

Standout junior quarterback Cameron Rising of Newbury Park could be sidelined for the rest of the season after injuring his shoulder during a loss to Calabasas.

Big games

It will be the battles of the unbeatens next Friday. Hacienda Heights Los Altos (8-0) plays at Covina Charter Oak (8-0) and La Canada St. Francis (8-0) plays at Los Angeles Cathedral (8-0).
